Kata Sono Ichi    Kata Number 1

This kata is only found in Jujitsu, but also in Karate and Tae Kwon Do styles. Although the movements are very similar, each style changes the blocking or striking techniques slightly. This particular kata is considered an H or I form kata. This is because the foot movement forms the shape of a capital H or I on the floor. Movements eight and sixteen end with a Kiai (spirited yell) that is done with the punch. The leg that is forward during each step is the same arm that performs the block or punch. Therefore if the left leg is forward, the left arm performs a block or punch. The other hand makes a fist and is positioned in the chamber. The chamber is a spot on the side of the body between the Obi (belt) and the ribs (palm up).

Before starting this kata, the student bows to Joseki (front of the dojo), then bows to the head teacher, then bows to the teacher counting the kata (if there is one). At the end of the kata, if all the movements are performed correctly, the student should end up exactly where they started.
