Striking Techniques - Tsuki Waza

There are a multitude of different striking techniques that can be classified into 6 basic types.

  1. Upper Punch - Jodan-Tsuki

  2. Middle Punch - Chudan-Tsuki

  3. Lower Punch - Gedan-Tsuki

  4. Palm Heal - Shotei-Tsuki

  5. Back Fist Punch - Uraken-Tsuki

  6. Elbow Strike - Hiji Ate

Key points to remember when practicing Striking techniques

Extending the striking arm or leg fully could hyper-extend an elbow or knee. Always leave a slight bend in the arm or leg when it is fully extended.

Power comes from the entire body, not just from the arm or leg.

Never over-extend a strike. If you reach too far with a strike, you will be off balance and easily thrown.

Always exhale when striking. This increases power to the technique and helps protect you by contracting the abdominal muscles.

It is also important that you understand how to strike through a target. If you are aiming at your opponents chin, you must aim for the back of your opponents head. This way when you hit the chin, your strike continues forward 'through' the target. This is the only way to generate the necessary power to hit a target effectively.

Remember, without safety, there can be no Jujitsu.

Before beginning any martial art practice, you must always know primary rule.
