Soke
Nobuyoshi Higashi, B.A., M.A. Head instructor, Kokushi Budo Institute of
New York. Founder of KokushiRyu Jujutsu. 7th Degree Black Belt Kodokan
Judo, and 7th Degree Black Belt Aikido and Karate and his advanced

In
1962, Reverend Shiri Nishi was teaching Judo in a small basement room of
the New York Buddhist Church. Reverend Shiri Nishi moved on to take up
ministerial duties in Sacramento, and the American Buddhist Academy
entered into a cultural exchange agreement with Kokushikan University in
Japan, whereby, Professor Sojuro Kobayashi came to the Academy to teach
Judo and Chieko Kikuchi went to teach English at Kokushikan. In that
same year, 1962, the dojo was moved to the larger room and its current
location, next to the Academy. In the next few years, Nobuyoshi
Higashi and Yoichiro Matsumura arrived to supplement the dojo's teaching
staff and together they made the New York Buddhist Church Judo Dojo one
of the strongest in the country and a leader of Judo in the United
States. In time Senseis Kobayashi and Matsumura returned to Kokushikan
University but Soke Higashi remained to teach.
Soke
Higashi studied many martial arts, including ancient Jujutsu, Judo,
Karate, Aikido and Kendo. After researching martial arts for many years,
he joined ancient techniques with modern martial arts. In January, 1965
Soke Higashi established the International Kokushi-ryu Jujutsu
Association (IKGJA).
