The
martial art of Judo was created by Professor Kano. He was a
student of Jujitsu. He took what he felt was the best parts of
Jujitsu and used it to form the basis of Judo. Therefore by
default, throwing techniques can be directly traced back to Jujitsu.
There are many different throwing techniques in Jujitsu and each school
will emphasize different ones. The following throws can be found
in the majority of Jujitsu styles.
-
O Soto
Gari - Major Outer Reaping Throw
-
Tai
Otoshi - Body Drop Throw
-
O
Goshi - Big Outside Throw
-
Ippon
Seoi Nage - One Arm Shoulder Throw
Each
school may execute these throws slightly differently, but taking from
the knowledge obtained from Judo, they should be performed with the
following in mind:
-
Off-balance your opponent before applying the technique.
-
Keep
your center of gravity lower than your opponent.
-
Use
speed rather than power
-
Drive
through you target with the throw
-
Keep
your knees slightly bent to ensure proper
balance.
Remember, without safety, there can be no
Jujitsu.
