Stances / Tachi-Kata

The following key points should be remembered when executing any stance:

  • Maintain flexibility

  • Standing in the dojo is different from standing outside on uneven ground

  • Always exhale when blocking. This increases power to the technique and helps protect you by contracting the abdominal muscles.

  • Execute the block in such a way that contact is closer to the elbow than the wrist. 

Practice stances in front of a mirror. This way you can see what you are doing.

A Natural Stance is executed by standing naturally with your feet shoulder with apart and the weight evenly distributed on both feet.  There are three types of Natural Stances:

  1. Neutral or Basic Natural Stance

  2. Right Natural Stance

  3. Left Natural Stance

Natural Stance (Shizen-Dachi)

Right Natural Stance (Migi-Shizen-Dachi)

Same as Natural Stance but bring the right foot forward

Left Natural Stance (Hidari-Shizen-Dachi)

Same as Natural Stance but bring the left foot forward

 Remember, without safety, there can be no Jujitsu. 


Before beginning any martial art practice, you must always know primary rule.
