Kata is a set pre-arranged combination of movements
that simulate attack and defense. It is often performed with slow moving
techniques (not full power and speed). Almost all martial art forms have
different katas that reflect directly to that specific Ryu (style).
Different martial art styles may use the same kata, changing a block or
strike. Within a particular Ryu, the individual techniques taught at
separate schools my be different depending upon the teachers strengths,
but the katas for that Ryu are always performed the same way. Kata links
all schools in a particular Ryu by ensuring that identical techniques
and common movements are learned by all students. Katas increase in
difficulty as a student increases in rank. There are also Katas for
weapons.
When executing kata, perfect form, movement,
stance, speed, rhythm, spirit, balance and power are essential. In
tournaments, these are the criteria that the person performing the kata
is judged against. It is also important to note that it is impossible to
master any kata. The whole concept behind kata is to constantly
practice, improving the form and technique. It is the movement, not the
completion that holds significance. Many practice kata for the sense of
centering that the movements have on the individual. This is because
kata is as much mental as it is physical.
